On Stephen Colbert

We recently received the news that Stephen Colbert has been cancelled. The highest rated late night show is being discontinued because of “financial issues.” This is hard to imagine given his show – Late Night With Stephen Colbert – is incredibly popular. Social media has taken to criticizing the move, people recognizing without a blink of the eye, this is a political move. I had a chance to see the show live in person years ago and I remember how refreshing it was to have a talk show host who never held back with what he contained in his monologue. The fact that he is being taken off the air after recently criticizing CBS for settling a 16M dollar deal with the POTUS administration for a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris is disturbing. The news of his cancellation came shortly thereafter. The complaint is they edited it to favor Harris’ public perception in the campaign. The fact is, POTUS didn’t like it, and this settlement shows the frightening reach he has in our world, beyond being the POTUS even.

We are in the middle of a storm of propagandic activity that risks any element of freedom of speech. When the POTUS can call the shots against anything that goes against his desires, it remains a very scary reality. This cancellation would appear to be just the beginning of Stephen Colbert’s reaction to the news. He will find some way to keep his message strong. The reality of this action is a strong warning to our society that if we don’t get a handle on the POTUS’ actions we are in very serious trouble. We are being daily inundated with executive actions in the White House that are turning our lives upside down. It’s not about fixing our society, it’s about lining a person’s ego driven mania.

We need to do better.

  1. Ed,

I know nothing about Stephen Colbert, as I am unaware of any US late-night show being shown here. It would appear to me that there are far too many companies and individuals who are scared sh.tless. If no one stands up to Mr Nasty, he will carry on in his usual obnoxious manner. Where are the advertisers? Again, it’s a numbers game – work together or lose.

Excuse my ignorance, but what or who is POTUS? Why the acronym? What is wrong with Mr Nasty?

    Regards, Phil

    1. I like your commentary Phil. I’m opposed to using his name so I go with POTUS – President of the United States, which even then doesn’t sit well with me, given the present owner of the title. Thanks for your words.
