Here I will focus the writing on poetry and commentary.

A couple of years ago

they took a knife to me

yes it was pretty brutal

all of which I couldn’t see

thank God for modern

technology

I was in surgery

to fix a leaking pipe

seemed pretty cut and dry

no pun because I bled  I cry

Yet here is my quandary

I wonder about the heart

how often we feel

drawn to the ache

the notion

of having our heart

split apart

by such tasking

human behavior

I’m not talking about just love

and romance

and mushy events

I’m referring to life

and feeling connected

just like the day

they surgically

realigned my parts.

We do need that affirmation

that resonance

of feeling we are a part

of something

and not apart.

Today I look at a beautiful sun

and on my couch while the birds

do feed nearby

giving battle to a

mangy and clever little squirrel

I wonder about the heart,

and I question

‘whether tis nobler’

to recognize that in the heart

there is also a necessary need

for that constant flow

to never be hindered

by obstacles

much like our lives

cannot ever afford

to allow negativity

that human hindrance

to step in the way

of our lofty goals.

I think it’s amazing how we still hold the heart as central to so much, imbuing it with characteristics that would be less lovingly or romantically felt if we said ‘the brain’. We poets would be lost. But, it is the link to every organ, pulsing life through our human weakness. I’ve just finished teaching ‘Body Systems’ to a class of 8 and 9 year olds and what we all realised moreso at the end was the tremendous interconnections and interdependence of our wonderful bodies. Absolutely, we cannot afford obstacles in our systems nor negativity in our lives. I hope your surgery was a great success – God bless the skill and brains of the medical profession – and the strength of our hearts to keep life flowing. May your convalescence be more full of such thoughtful words.

Wow, very kind. Thank you for taking the time to express such a wonderful commentary. Actually the convalescence was more of a year ago. When they discovered my condition, the cardiologist said this would be an anomaly to my current physical health, and now two and a half years later it has proven to be just that. The really cool thing is I believe it has drawn me closer to my purpose for writing. The pleasure is mutual.
