Sitting In My Personal Space

Getting ready for the school year,

planning lessons,

rearranging books and files,

adjusting to a new physical classroom.

I wanted to complain tonight,

my room still needs desk,

35 kids coming in a week,

no ac, the temp was 110 F.

I sat out in the hall,

parent and student open house,

lots of people walking through,

new construction, ceilings missing tiles.

I joked how I was too exhausted,

the heat, couldn’t touch my room,

decided until tomorrow to rearrange,

as tonight I would surely break a sweat.

We have a beautiful new space,

expanding the student opportunities,

new carpet, walls, designs all meant

to enhance the students’ education.

The space isn’t complete,

I need desks in my room,

I haven’t got any a.c.

no wireless, and vacant walls.

I went home tonight exhausted,

and then suddenly it all became real,

I no longer cared about my classroom,

I watched the news tonight in Houston.

Freedom Without Tears

At first glance nearly impossible,

to imagine,

our lives holding dry eyes

while freedom quietly knocks on our door.

We have to understand with love

we explore

the beauty of acceptance

that surreal moment when peace speaks.

I want to believe

freedom without tears

might exist in the heart

when this world begins the day less needy.

I heard cries on the street

new confusion,

we do wish for the moment

we might struggle to know our own identity.

I wonder though some time

speak compassion

are we really wanting this,

or is it another Warhol scream to be heard.

I do believe the tears

will satisfy

the pain in our heart

far greater is the will of emotion than stone.

We collect ourselves

again resilient

to forget yesterday’s ruse,

yet tomorrow, our tears must follow freedom.

When Priority Screams

alone

When that was real and time suddenly slowed,

I stood alone, I wondered, I couldn’t hold

~

my own, I needed a shoulder, somewhere to talk,

couldn’t imagine the fear in every step I would walk.

~

The blur of what was seemingly important just

minutes before, became a trivial memory of dust.

~

When I look in your eyes, I only know I have a want

to be by your side, to hold you, to be your gallant.

~

I cried a little bit today when later I heard the news,

I didn’t know that suddenly my life would speak blues.

~

We’re fortunate to know our lives have brought us here

in a place where love and time and passion lives so near.

~

I look at you my beautiful son and wish that any fear,

might realize delightful relief in the eyes of a single tear.
