I Want To Understand

By

The news came on today with a chaos, a reality

I didn’t want to hear. Our country, again.

In the quiet morning of my home, I haven’t any way

to relate to the pain innocent lives are now living.

In my shelter I’ll have my coffee and feed my dog,

while on the other side of the world, people will die.

In the last hours we can be assured that lives are

in peril, in rubble, children taught how not to live.

I heard about students attending a class on Saturday.

Those innocent eyes now buried on top of one another.

I’m dependent upon the media to reveal the horror.

My dog is napping nearby. my second cup of coffee.

I will leave the news on, looking at a world on fire,

reporting on a horrific action, I am helpless to accept.
