Riley Cooper’s Reduction Speech

A country boy
I like to party and drink some beers
Work out in the morning wearing ‘no fears’
To me life is a toy
~
That’s why I forgot I live in the public eye
And all my misgivings are firsthand news
I make amends and they’re singin’ the blues
When I walk alone someone is surely nearby
~
The other night that wasn’t me slurring
Out loud I am a different person than beside
Groups of my, uh, well-wishers, shocked inside
Knowing this reality is perhaps recurring
~
See now, listen just for a minute everyone
(Hear) is the reality of my now famous word
Could it be said not being racist is absurd?
Would that settle the mystique … ?
~
We are a racist society
Stoic, so sorry, slides slow shallow slurs
Sucking the marrow until our mind blurs
Recreating a visible integrity
~
Our world would like to believe
That we aren’t really preoccupied
Speaking out loud is seldom denied
We’re not soon asked to leave
~
I’m a football player people not your baby’s
Role model. I like to be stinking drunk
So I can say what it is I feel and junk
Outcomes measured by different degrees
~
So now, on the outside I’ve become a pariah
My team folds its tent to shelter the city
Meanwhile on every street lies a litany
Of racist innuendo and sharpened tongues. Ah…
~
Speak again NFL man in your honest and ugly terms
Let raised eyebrows respond while the next city squirms

Please I would love you to share words, suggestions …
